What happened?

France controlled the game from the first whistle in the 32-degree heat. Mbappé nearly opened the scoring in the 12th minute but hit the post. He made no mistake 12 minutes later, slotting home after a swift counter. Before half-time, he also set up Michael Olise for the second after a misplaced pass from Gustaf Lagerbielke.

Sweden fought hard but lacked creativity in attack. Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak created a few half-chances, but France’s defence held firm. Viktor Gyökeres, who played the full 90 minutes, said after the game: “We fight, we give everything. But over 90 minutes they deserved to win and we did everything we could. Victor Lindelöf added: “If we’d gone in at 0–0 at half-time it would have been better. It’s individual actions from them that make the difference.”

Why was it so tough?
