Victor Nilsson Lindelöf gathered the World Cup squad for breakfast in Stockholm on Wednesday where all players received custom-made cabin bags with coordinates to their youth clubs, gaming consoles and cameras. The initiative comes from the captain who wants to strengthen team unity ahead of the tournament in North America. He had invited the entire squad and many attended the meeting at the player hotel before the first training session at Bosön.
Each cabin bag contained not only the player's name but also the geographical coordinates of the club where they began their football career. This was intended as a reminder of the journey from childhood pitches to the World Cup stage in the USA, Canada and Mexico. In addition to the bags, all players received gaming consoles to play both alone and against each other, as well as cameras to document the adventure during the tournament.
In ten days, the team will fly to the World Cup base in Dallas before facing Tunisia, the Netherlands and Japan in the group stage. Prior to that, a training camp in Stockholm awaits with friendly matches against Norway in Oslo and Greece in Solna. The first training session takes place at Bosön on Wednesday where players will gather before departure.
Viktor Gyökeres will be absent as he plays in the Champions League final with Arsenal on Saturday. Otherwise, all selected players are expected to attend the camp.
The team is building on the team spirit that Graham Potter created during the World Cup playoffs against Ukraine and Poland where Sweden secured their place in the tournament. Nilsson Lindelöf, who is one of few players in the squad with experience from multiple tournaments and the only one with minutes in a previous World Cup, now wants to take it a step further. By connecting the players' past to their present goals, he hopes to strengthen both individual motivation and collective focus.
This initiative shows how the national team is using personal symbols to create unity ahead of a championship where travel and time zones will challenge the players. By letting each player carry a piece of their history, the leadership hopes to create a sense of belonging that can carry deep into the tournament. Players will be able to use the bags throughout the championship and the consoles to relax between matches and training sessions.
The squad has now gathered for an important training camp where the final preparations will be made before departure to North America. With matches against highly motivated sides like the Netherlands and Japan, every detail in the preparations will count. Nilsson Lindelöf's focus on team spirit could prove decisive when Sweden finally steps onto the World Cup stage and faces the best teams in the world.
